SUITMAN / RASTA TIGER / YOUNG KIM
Suitman is a living art created by Korean Visual Artist Young Kim.
Together, Young and Suitman have traveled through six continents, over thousands of destinations interacting with all walks of life, gathering inspiration for their work ranges from photography, films, installation, performances and design objects.
When putting his music selector's hat on, Suitman is also known as Rasta Tiger.
“ I am Korean. Korean was my only language and Seoul was my home until the age of ten. My family immigrated to the U.S. in the 70’s. I then grew up and worked in the U.S. until early 2000. Soaking up like a sponge, I was learning a new language, arts, music, and other cultures during my adolescence. At the same time, I was exposed to so much violence during the 70-80s in the U.S.
New York City was dangerous in the early ’80s. Everyone was on edge. The atmosphere was filled with tension and violence. But, one of my positive memories from that era was about an old man in the neighborhood. Every weekend, he would sit out on the sidewalk with a folding table where he placed a plate of pasta, a bottle of wine, and a boombox. He sat there and played his music, and had his meal. Over a while, he became a fixture of the neighborhood. It was a breath of fresh air to watch amid the gloom surrounding the era. That was my inspiration to create a mobile sound system and share my music selection with the community."
